How to track protein intake
A useful protein log starts with a target, then records the foods you actually ate. Days you skip stay blank. They are not treated as zero.
Set the target first
Calculate a range from body weight, then save the grams you want as the daily goal. If no goal is saved, the tracker says to set one and does not show a percentage. The goal for a past date is the latest saved goal whose effective date is on or before that date.
Add an entry
- Search the built-in list or pick a recent or favorite food. The list has 22 approximate foods, including eggs, dairy, chicken, fish, tofu, lentils, oats, rice, peanut butter, and a whey scoop. Each row is labeled approximate.
- Enter the amount. Protein is reference protein times the amount you typed, divided by the reference amount, in that food’s unit.
- Or use Quick Add and type the grams directly. That does not scale a catalog food.
- Or create a custom food when the list does not have what you ate.
- Repeat a recent meal when the same foods come back.
Read the day
The day total is the sum of stored grams for the date you picked. Going over the goal shows the real total and how far above it is. The progress ring is not capped at 100 percent. You can edit or delete an entry.
Look back without filling gaps
Averages, tracked-day counts, and consistency use logged days only. A streak is consecutive local dates that have at least one log, ending today if today is logged, otherwise yesterday. If neither is logged, the streak is 0. Weekly bars cover Monday through Sunday. The month view is a heatmap of logged days.
Common mistakes
- Treating the catalog numbers as a lab analysis. They are examples, and the app does not cite a nutrient database.
- Assuming a missed day counts as zero protein. It is missing, so it drops out of the average.
- Comparing today’s total with a goal you have not saved yet.
How the app fits
Protein Calculator & Tracker keeps the calculator and the log in one Android app. Export a CSV only when you open the system file picker. See what stays on the phone and how the daily target is chosen.
Questions
What if I forget to log a day?
That date is missing, not zero. Averages and consistency ignore it. The streak breaks unless the gap is covered by today or yesterday at the end of the run.
Can I log a food that is not in the list?
Yes. Add a custom food, or use Quick Add and type the protein grams.
